How to Read a International VIN

International trucks are built by International Motors, LLC, the company formerly known as Navistar, and every International VIN is 17 characters long. US-built complete trucks begin with 1HS and US-built chassis begin with 1HT. Here is what each part means, using a real truck.

EXAMPLE: 2022 INTERNATIONAL LT625

International VIN Prefixes

The first three characters of a VIN identify who built the vehicle. These are the main prefixes NHTSA has registered for International trucks. "Truck" means it left the factory complete; "incomplete vehicle" means it was sold as a chassis for a body builder to finish.

NHTSA files these prefixes under several make names, including International, Navistar and IC Bus, so an older truck may decode with Navistar as the make.

Where to Find the VIN

Open the driver's door and read the certification label on the door frame or door edge. Most heavy trucks also have the VIN stamped into the frame rail, and it is printed on the title, registration and insurance card.

On a phone, tap Scan VIN and point the camera at the label instead of typing.

International Models Covered

The decoder works with any International VIN NHTSA has on file, including the LT Series, RH Series, HV Series, MV Series, HX Series, CV Series, ProStar, LoneStar, WorkStar, 4300, 4400, 7600, and 9900i.
