How to Read a Ram VIN

Ram trucks are built by FCA US, and every Ram VIN is 17 characters long. US-built pickups begin with 1C6, Mexican-built pickups begin with 3C6, and Mexican-built chassis cabs begin with 3C7. Here is what each part means, using a real truck.

Ram VIN Prefixes

The first three characters of a VIN identify who built the vehicle. These are the main prefixes NHTSA has registered for Ram trucks. "Truck" means it left the factory complete; "incomplete vehicle" means it was sold as a chassis for a body builder to finish.

Older Ram pickups were sold as the Dodge Ram and carry Dodge prefixes such as 1D7 and 3D7. The decoder reads those as well.

Where to Find the VIN

Look through the windshield at the driver-side corner of the dash, or open the driver's door and read the certification label on the door frame. The VIN is also printed on the title, registration and insurance card.

On a phone, tap Scan VIN and point the camera at the label instead of typing.

Ram Models Covered

The decoder works with any Ram VIN NHTSA has on file, including the 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, and ProMaster.
